Copy a user account vista

Joined Apr 4, Messages Quick question: Is there any obstacle to transferring user account personal data from Vista to Windows 8? Hard drive was fine, explained to client that data was salvageable, client said they would go ahead and shop for a notebook. Copied user account and personal data to USB flash drive.

Was in the middle of copying to flash when client walked in with a new PC in the box, HP Pavilion like the old one preloaded with Windows 8. Now I must admit I have not worked on windows 8 much. If all the old data is 64 bit there shouldn't be a problem? What about 32 bit files? Thanks in advance. TerryNet Terry. I was thinking along the lines of. I know xp to vista has that issue, I don't know about vista to win8. Triple6 Rob. Joined Dec 26, Messages 52, Netghost56 said:. I know they're not system files. I am just wondering if I can transfer the users account with their music, images, Internet and application settings without any conflict since the old system was vista and the new one is win8.

The plan is to set up the new system, create a user account with the same name as the original, and copy the account from the old system into the new user account folder. Yes of course. You can either manually copy the data, not the whole account, that has never worked and does not work.

Or you use the Windows Easy File Transfer to migrate the settings and data. Yeah I am going to open the folder, select everything inside, then paste into the new folder. See what happens. Since I still have the hard drive I will talk to my boss about possibly doing an image copy, or the Easy file transfer. You cannot copy the entire users folder, only the data folders. Typically I would log into a users new account to create the initial directories under documents and settings and then use this utility to copy their old accounts data tot he new account. In Vista user accounts have been moved from documents and setting to a users folder.

I figure that it would work the same way and you could point the data to one of these folders however this does not seem to work. Is there something I am missing? Has anyone done this sucessfully?
