As previously mentioned, the first thing I had to throw out was the concept of plug-and-play. Once the application is installed, the similarity to other sample libraries ends.

In order to really take advantage of this app, a second application is used, namely WordBuilder. WordBuilder is the application that allows the user to specify what text is to be sung, as well as the duration and dynamics of the piece. For those who may not grab the concept, it is easiest to think of WordBuilder as an intermediary app — it sits between your input device usually a MIDI keyboard controller, sequencing or scoring app and the Choirs Kompakt player.

After plowing through the first few WordBuilder chapters, I decided it was time to get Choirs setup with Logic Pro, my sequencer of choice, so I could really put it to the test.

The manual for Choirs goes into detail describing the possible configurations, depending on what operating system and sequencing or scoring application you wish to use. MIDI loopback connections are required for most of these configurations. This is the most powerful vocals solution available. Symphonic Choirs puts five complete choir sections at your fingertips. The SATB and Boys sections are all compatible with WordBuilder, described at right, and give you the ability to have your choir sing the words you type. When used in WordBuilder, these sections have four articulations: sustained, legato, staccato, and. Three solo singers are also included. While not compatible with WordBuilder, you get a variety of articulations for each singer:.

WordBuilder lets you type in words in English for the Choirs to sing. For added detail, you can use WordBuilder's internal phonetic language, VoTox. With VoTox you get complete control over each phoneme. Adjust timing, volume, and crossfade to get just the sound you need. The "Learn" function adapts WordBuilder's timing to your playing to give you even greater control over crossfades and complex pronunciation. The "Phrases" pop-up menu includes 28 popular Latin phrases that you can load instantly.

Many choirs sing in Latin so this can be a real time saver for those on a tight deadline. The Phrases menu is completely customizable so users can add their own phrases to the menu for quick and easy access.

Because Voices of the Apocalypse was also recorded with wordbuilding in mind, these new expansion patches also work with Wordbuilder. Men's and Women's FFF vowels ah, ih, uh, oh, oo, eh, ee are included as well as the "Angels" and "Demons" patches from the original Voices of the Apocalypse. No matter how much reverb you put on those recordings, they never sound good. The sounds are inspiring to play because they sound so good. Wordbuilder sends to midi yolk port 1 channels , and symphonic choirs is set to receive from midi yolk port 1. The result is usually a uniform 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I must be stupid, but I need someone to tell me where? I use Choirs with Cubase. It takes some massaging, but I can usually get a phrase sounding uncannily real. The only problem is that with Cubase 5 it doesn't export properly dropped syllables and such which has been determined to be a Cubase problem.

The guys at EastWest are working on a new version where the WordBuilder will be directly integrated with the Play engine, which should solve this problem. Can't wait for this! Yeah, I reckon I'm just going to start using it in Cubase now. Who could have thought that would actually be simpler??
